Volunteers are the heart of the Boston Latin School Association. Since 1844, alumni commitment has made the difference for the next generation of Latin School students. Today is no different. New faces and extra hands are always needed. Here are some of the ways to get involved:
Serve on your Reunion Committee. Plan Reunion Weekend activities for your classmates and help build support for your class gift.
Apply for a seat on a Standing Committee of the Board. These are just some examples of ways that alumni from various generations and backgrounds can come together to address common needs and interests.
Volunteer at BLS. Serve as a mentor or tutor with a program such as:
Saturday Success School Saturday Success School offers help and enrichment to nearly 90 students in classes VI, V and IVB. Students choose to attend from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday mornings to learn and study in a supportive educational environment. Alumni volunteers provide individual instruction to students. For additional information, contact McCarthy Institute Director Rose Delorme Metayer '07 at (617) 635-8895.
Career Day for Class II The Guidance Office hosts Career Day in March. It offers alumni the chance to open students’ minds to professional worlds about which they may have little more than cursory understanding. From health careers to law, from education to public relations, from psychology to music, students express wide-ranging interest in both for-profit and not-for-profit industries. Contact School Counselor Andrea Encarnacao Martin P'27 via (617) 635-8895 for more information.
Science Day BLS' annual Science Day includes both the Science Fair and Science Expo. The Science Fair is where students vie to earn a place at the city and regional competitions. The competition amongst BLS students has heated up since the introduction of the Science Mentor Program. The Mentor Program teams students with professional scientists from the community. Alumni who have an interest in science are invited to serve as Science Fair judges each year. For more details, please contact Science Program Director Kathleen (Rana) Bateman '93 at (617) 635-8895 ext. 153.
Science Olympiad The Science Program at BLS is currently accepting coaches for all events for the 2019-2020 Science Olympiad Team. If any alumni are interested in volunteering as coaches, please contact Science Program Director Kathleen (Rana) Bateman '93 at (617) 635-8895 ext. 153.
Tutoring Program BLS graduates also tutor in the After-School Tutoring Program, Monday through Thursday, from 2:25 p.m. to 3:25 p.m. at the School.
