LAST CALL: SOUTH SHORE DINNER
Elizabeth Chen '81 will be the featured speaker when the South Shore Chapter gathers for its annual dinner tomorrow evening, October 25, at Siros Marina Bay in Quincy. Her remarks, "The Times…They are a'changing…" will focus on women, men, family and careers, but specifically about how we need to re-cast what and how we think about careers and how we each need to do our job to make it happen. Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 will also provide an update on BLS today. Tickets are $40 per person, $36 for young alumni and are available by calling (617) 450-0004, ext. 135.

FLIGHTS OF FANCY
For Northern Californians who can't make it back to Boston for the annual Alumni Dinner, consider mingling with other local alumni on Wednesday, November 2, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at a wine tasting at Lavanda Restaurant in Palo Alto. This casual gathering will feature flights of wines from local boutique wineries and hors d'oeuvres, as well as an update on what's been happening back at Alma Mater. Register online by clicking here or contact Kate DeForest at (617) 450-0004, ext. 26, with any questions.

DIALOGUE & DISCOURSE SERIES LAUNCHED
Richard A. Clarke '68, the best-selling author of "Against All Enemies," will kick off Dialogue & Discourse: The Boston Latin School Alumni Speaker Series on November 7 in the BLS Auditorium. Clarke will read from his first novel, "The Scorpion's Gate" beginning at 7 p.m. General alumni tickets are $10; for $100, alumni will receive a copy of Clarke's book as well as an invitation to a Head Master's Reception that precedes the public program, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Keefe Library. Following the public session, Clarke will participate in a book signing, where his novel will be available for purchase courtesy of Borders Books. Click here for more information or to register.

A SOFT SPOT FOR SCIENCE?
Preparations for the 2006 Science Fair have begun and alumni mentors — working in chemistry, physics, biology, engineering and other related fields — are needed to work with young BLS scientists. Whether working at the school, in a lab or wherever the project takes place, mentors help students pose a scientific problem and guide them as they seek the necessary avenues to a solution. Last year, 42 BLS Science Fair winners went on to the city fair, where 36 took home prizes; another 20 students went on to the state Science Fair and won 16 prizes, including first place winner Anneke Schwob '06. For more information on how you can get involved in the mentor program and the February 4, 2006, BLS Science Fair, or to review volunteer guidelines, please e-mail Lynn Flaherty.

TIME FOR TURKEY DAY
Don't forget — the annual Thanksgiving Day contest between Latin and English will kick off at Harvard Stadium at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 24. Of special note for fans of the historic Harvard Stadium: rumor has it this may be the last football game on the hallowed Harvard sod, as the stadium is scheduled to receive a turf field before next season. Dig out the ol' purple and white woolens now!

FUND-RAISING EFFORTS UNDERWAY
Each year, BLSA strives to raise unrestricted support for the school, and all gifts made over the course of the year, large or small, allow Head Master Kelley the flexibility to meet vital needs not covered in the city budget. Please watch your mail for invitations to support BLS via our Annual Fund mailings, in the Fall Bulletin, or even the website. Unrestricted donations by alumni, parents and friends do much to enhance the program offerings at the school and truly make a difference in the daily lives of students.

ANNUAL FUND HOUSEKEEPING NOTES
As the 2005-06 year progresses, the Annual Fund will be updating how it recognizes dedicated donors, with giving societies revised to be more reflective of Latin's ties to history and the head masters who helped shape the school. A full explanation of the new societies is included in the 2005 Fall Bulletin (due for release in early November) with regular updates to follow in @blsa. Questions? Please contact Kate DeForest.

ALUMNAE CALLING NIGHT
Sponsored by BLSA's new Alumnae Initiative, the next Alumnae Discussion Group will take place on Tuesday, November 1, beginning at 6 p.m. at the BLSA offices. The focus will be upcoming events and promoting attendance at the Alumni Dinner. Light refreshments will be served. Come prepared to make phone calls! Due to building security, pre-registration is required. Click here to register, or contact Nicole Devlin '01 via e-mail or by calling (617) 450-0004, ext. 135 for more information.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL

Facing History & Ourselves teacher Judi Freeman reported that 40 of her students (as well as other BLS scholars) are planning to participate in "Retracing the Struggle: The Legacy of the Voting Rights Act of 1965," a commemorative march led by Congressman John Lewis of Georgia scheduled for October 30. The march, organized in part by Sid Topol '41 of The Topol Group and Ron Bell '81 of the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, will follow a route similar to that taken by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965 to protest the segregation of Boston's public schools. For more information or to participate, click here or call Bell at (617) 445-3700.

A visiting team of 22 educators representing the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) spent October 16-19 at Alma Mater as the culminating part of the school's accreditation process, which occurs once every 10 years. During their visit, the team examined every aspect of Latin School's learning environment, interviewing students, teachers, faculty, administrators and representatives of the alumni association. The visiting team — comprised of representatives from the six New England states — will report back to the NEASC commission, who will then vote on the school's accreditation status in March 2006.
On a related note, the school's TV station, WBLS, created a special DVD of school footage for the viewing pleasure of the visiting committee, one that Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 plans to share with alumni as she visits the regional chapters and clubs in the coming months.
A final note on the accreditation front: As if their homework load was not heavy enough, all Latin School scholars were required to commit to memory the school's mission statement, as visiting team members would be quizzing students at random as part of their three-day visit. As the Head Master reported, "Some of them even knew it in Latin." We would expect nothing less….

A TEST OF TRIVIA
When in doubt with an @blsa trivia question, it is never a bad idea to chime in with the answer of Phillips Brooks, as September winner Kaitlyn Leahy '96 did (in about four minutes flat) to trivia kingpin Malcolm Flynn's query, "In 1935 Henry Munroe Rogers said of this renowned Boston Latin School alumnus and former usher: "He could reform the rest of the world, but he could not reform this class [1858]." As we give our assistant head master a well deserved month off from his exhaustive trivia research, we mark the trivia return of the ever-popular Alumni Relations Director Lynn Flaherty, who brings us back to the present with the following query in honor of the upcoming Veterans' Day commemoration:

October's question:
What Latin School alumnus — include name and class year — was the first permanent dean of the United States Air Force Academy?

Trivia foot soldiers seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS

Attorney and author Stan Tobin '48 of Los Angeles has published his latest work, "A Legacy Lost," a serious yet entertaining commentary on Democratic party history with mentions of some of the more colorful political players of the past five decades.

Paul Campanis '55 of Dover was recently featured in the Hometown Weekly newspaper as a "Hometown Hero" for making a mark in his community as a SHINE counselor (counseling seniors on Medicare and Medicaid) and his involvement with the ongoing Dover Cable TV program, "The Elders," providing information on topics relevant to seniors.
Dr. A. Thomas Indresano '63 of Oakland, CA, was presented with the 2005 Donald B. Osbon Award for Outstanding Educator by the American Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons at their annual meeting in Boston in late September.
