REUNIONS 2006
Wet and windy weekend weather could not dampen the high spirits of hundreds of devoted Latin School alumni who returned to their roots for Reunions 2006 on May 12 & 13. Though a number of planned daytime activities were canceled as a result of the torrential downpours — including a highly anticipated Red Sox outing — old favorites went on as planned, including a special day at the school for the 50th reunion class of 1956, an outstanding Prize Declamation performance and the ever-popular Saturday night class banquets. In addition, Saturday's post-60th reunion luncheon hosted, among others, five members from the 70th reunion class of 1936 and five members from the 75th reunion class of 1931, including tennis ace Sumner Rodman, who had played a good game earlier that morning.

REMEMBERING IMETTE
On Thursday, June 1, friends and family will gather to remember Imette Saint-Guillen '99, with a memorial service at Boston Latin. The BLS family is invited to attend, but pre-registration is encouraged to help plan appropriately. Please click here for more information.

ONE FOR THE MANTEL
Once we accepted the fact that having our name placed on the auditorium frieze was about as likely as winning the next American Idol competition, there was always one other option for achieving ultimate BLS greatness: namely winning the highly coveted Distinguished Graduate of the Year Award! It is not too late to nominate either yourself or the student you always aspired to be, and even the youngsters among us (translate: graduates of the last 15 years) have the same opportunity via the Recent Outstanding Graduate of the Year Award. Criteria and forms may be downloaded by clicking here or obtained by calling the alumni relations office at (617) 450-0004. To be considered for 2006, all nominations must be received by June 1.

WORKING FOR PEACE IN BOSTON
Increasing violence in our fair city has made the next edition of Dialogue & Discourse: The Boston Latin School Alumni Speakers Series more relevant than ever. "Working for Peace in Boston" will be held on June 6 and includes panelists Rev. William Dickerson '80 of the Greater Love Tabernacle Church, Boston youth worker Cindy Diggs '83, Boston Police Deputy Superintendent Dan Linskey '85 and Raffi Yessayan '86, chief of the anti-gang unit at the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, who all work on the frontlines of this issue. To register for the event, which begins at 6 p.m. in the BLS Auditorium, click here.

BOSTON POPS REMEMBER BERNSTEIN
This year's "BLSA Goes Pops" takes on a Latin School theme as they present "Bernstein on Broadway" on Saturday, June 17. Alumni and friends are invited to remember the maestro at a special reception at the school beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets to the reception and the Keith Lockhart-conducted performance are $150 per person and include roundtrip shuttle service between Avenue Louis Pasteur and Symphony Hall. Regular, non-reception floor seats are also available for $75 each. Click here for more information and reservations.

FORE ALMA MATER
For those hitting the links for the second annual Wolfpack Classic Golf Tournament set for Thursday, June 8, at the Ferncroft Country Club, a $100 "Super Raffle" ticket could yield one of the following prizes, including Pebble Beach for two, with three nights/three rounds of golf at Pebble Beach/Spyglass/Spanish Bay; a $2,000 gift certificate to Luxurylink.com; an opportunity for you and a friend to be a "Top Gun" combat pilot for one day; or a $1,400 set of Titleist Irons. Only 400 super raffle tickets will be sold, so click here now for more information.

FOR LOVE OF THE GAME
As it turns out, America is not the only nation obsessed with baseball, as captured in the soon-to-be seen film by Kenneth Eng '94 titled "Kokoyakyu: High School Baseball" which airs nationally on PBS on Tuesday, July 4 at 10 p.m. Produced by Eng's classmate Alex Shear '94, the documentary details "Japan’s embrace of the sport, beginning in 1872 and today including Japanese players in the American big leagues like Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki and New York’s Hideki Matsui." Baseball fans should note that Eng's and Shear's film is set to premiere at the Brooklyn International Film Festival at the Brooklyn Museum in New York on June 8 at 4 p.m. For more information on the upcoming PBS broadcast, click here. BLS baseball buffs will await news of a deserved Oscar nomination for these talented young alumni!

ANOTHER ALMA MATER
Boston's Josiah Quincy School, the elementary foundation of many BLS students, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a number of events in June. Quincy School alumni are invited to a fund-raising banquet at China Pearl Restaurant on June 2, a student work expo at the school June 6-8, and a student performance expo the evening of June 8. Quincy school alumni are using the occasion to promote their new Quincy School Association JQSA). Click here for more information.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
It is with great sadness that we announce the May 16 passing of longtime BLS music teacher Lou Siagel of Newton, the leader of Latin School's exceptional student orchestra and a faculty member of 25 years. A prominent figure for many years in Boston's music community, legions of alumni will recall seeing Mr. Siagel walking Latin School's halls with a violin over one shoulder; always dressed to perfection in his jacket and tie. "We will dearly miss Lou and will always cherish his outstanding contributions to our music students," said Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44. Mr. Siagel is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly, as well as their children, grandchildren and his three siblings.

The following Boston Latin School scholars received top honors as part of the annual League of Women Voters of Massachusetts statewide essay contest. Winners, who were feted on April 30 at an awards ceremony held at Fanueil Hall, included eighth graders Nida Naushad (first place); Ali Ghorbi (tie-second place) and honorable mentions for Elle Brigida, Amelia Burke, Christopher Catalfamo, Megan Gianniny, Elodie Paquette, Megan Scipione, Arjun Varga and Jessica Wu. Congratulations to all!

Athletic Director John McDonough welcomed two new coaches for the spring sports season. Named as the Boston Globe's 1997 "Coach of the Year," Herb Chenell Jr. now heads the BLS boys tennis team following a successful 18-year tenure at Milton Academy. In addition, Gina Chechak has been named as the school's sailing coach after previous stints with the Nyack Boat Club in Nyack, NY, the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago, IL, and the Rochester Yachy Club in Rochester, NY.
Latin School's Boys Volleyball Team were named Dual County League champions for 2006! Congratulations to the players and coaches for their outstanding efforts in this challenging league!
Senior Winkong Hua had quite a week. After winning the Cornelius Martin Sullivan Award at Prize Declamation with a stunning rendition of Senator Barack Obama's "Speech: July 27, 2004 in Boston," on Friday afternoon (May 12), he was profiled in the Boston Globe that Saturday (May 13) as he prepared to head to the national Poetry Out Loud finals in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday (May 16) as the Massachusetts state winner.

A TEST OF TRIVIA
We are not certain how anyone knew the answer to last month's trivia question, but Walter F. Foley '73 is clearly not just anyone! Foley was first to send in the correct name and tenure of Latin School's Charles J. Capen, who served as "sub-master, master and senior master. He served longer at the school than any other, retiring at age 86 because the Boston School Committee instituted mandatory retirement at age 70." Capen's time at BLS lasted from 1852 to 1909, for a total of 57 impressive years

This month, we are quite pleased to present a question posed by avid trivia reader Anthony Tamis '53, which is respectfully posted below with one minor edit to add to the challenge.

May's question:
What alumnus and former BLS language teacher of many talents played semi-pro baseball in the Boston Park League, and what was the team on which he played?

Serious sports fans seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including your name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail to BLSA.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS
To all of our Alumni serving domestically or abroad in the Armed Forces, please send us your news so we may report it to your classmates and friends! All news may be submitted by clicking here.
Boston School Department Chief Operating Officer Michael Contompasis '57 has agreed to stay on indefinitely-and possibly serve as interim superintendent-as the search for a successor to Thomas Payzant continues. According to a Boston Globe article, School Committee chair Elizabeth Reilinger expects the search committee to complete their work this summer, as planned, but she asked Contompasis to stay on during the transition and "community and school system leaders applauded the move."

Gregory Deyermenjian '67, chairman of the New England Chapter of The Explorers Club, has been awarded a grant by the National Geographic Expeditions Council to conduct exploration and archaeology this June in an unexplored area of southeastern Peru. The exploration is a part of an ongoing project to identify the furthest ancient Incan stone structures lying directly to the north of Cusco, the ancient Incan capital.

The documentary feature "Reverse Aging Now," written and produced by Paul M.J. Suchecki '72, reveals specific lifestyle changes and cutting edge therapies that viewers can adopt to reverse the deterioration caused by aging to lead longer, healthier lives. The video draws on interviews with two dozen scientists and doctors from America's foremost educational and medical institutions including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UCLA and USC, and concludes in Okinawa with the secrets of the world's longest lived people. Visit www.reverseagingnow.com for more information.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino promoted Boston Police Lt. Detective Daniel Linskey '85 to Deputy Superintendent and named him chief of staff in the Commissioner's Office. Linskey was previously the chief of the Bureau of Special Services. He is a three-time winner of the Hanna Medal of Valor, the department's highest honor.
Thanks to Kevin Finn '93, Latin's baseball team is looking pretty spiffy in their brand new uniforms, purchased for the boys by the Los Angeles-based television producer. To see a photo of the sharp-looking team, click here to visit the school's website.
