SUMMERTIME IN THE CITY
Now that the torrential downpours of spring have passed, we welcome the blazing heat and humidity that are the hallmark of summers in Boston. A vacation to the shore beckons, so this issue will mark the last of @blsa until August. But fear not, dear readers, as news and trivia will return as September approaches, with a new scribe at the helm, no less. Kim Deely Emery '87 will soon take on the challenge of entertaining the masses as Vice President of Communications for BLSA after nine years at the University of Connecticut. A fond and grateful farewell is granted to Mary Tamer '85 and Loren Porter Boudo, who have jointly produced this newsletter since its inception in October 2005.

FAMILY FUN DAY
The Class of 1977 is organizing a family-friendly outing to a Brockton Rox game on Sunday, August 6. For $20 per person, you'll enjoy tickets to the game and a pre-game barbecue. Event chair Bob Tedesco '77 has opened registration to all interested alumni. For more information, click here.

RAIN DELAY, PART ll
Spirits were willing, but the fairways were again flooded, so the Wolfpack Classic has been rescheduled for Monday, August 28, when our afternoon shotgun will prove the old adage that the third time is indeed a charm. Click here to sign up your last minute foursome or to buy a "Super Raffle" ticket. Kudos to committee members Pat Daly '74, Jerry Devlin '78, Suzanne Dwyer '83, Lew Gack '62, Dan McCarthy '74, Bruce McKinnon '74, Jerry Murphy '69, George Psyhogeoes '77, Michael Rhodes '95 and Ken Stanger '64 for all their efforts, and our thanks to the hardy golfers who arrived at 6:30 a.m. on June 15 to a wet and unplayable golf course.

LAST MINUTE GIFTS
The end of June signifies the end of the fiscal year. Have you made your Annual Fund gift yet? Each gift makes a difference and gives the school the flexibility to enhance programs and resources above and beyond the basic level. Every member of Class II uses the College Review Center, supported entirely through alumni giving. Approximately 575 student athletes benefit each year from alumni gifts that provide for transportation, new uniforms and needed equipment. Technology is now found throughout the school, and it is alumni support that has made the difference. If you have not yet participated in the Annual Fund this year, please click here to make a secure unrestricted gift online before June 30. Your gift will increase the class of {{$USER_PREF_CLASS$}}'s participation levels and will be appreciated at BLS more than you know.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
While she is not able to perform a physical exam, esteemed Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 may also be called Dr. Kelley these days, after receiving a distinguished and honorary "Doctor of Letters" degree from neighboring Simmons College in May.

Head Master Emeritus Michael Contompasis '57 served as guest
speaker at the National Honor Society induction ceremony this month, putting a comic spin on his woes as a former student on the rarely discussed seven-year plan. The current chief operating officer for the Boston Public Schools — who has signed on to ease the transition of Boston's next superintendent — will celebrate his 50th reunion in May 2007.

During the last week of school, the Boston Latin Theatre Company presented "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" which included guest star appearances by both Head Master Kelley and Michael Giordano '84, director of the McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support. The Theatre Company, led by Christa Crewdson, held four performances from June 22-25 in the school's Black Box theater.
Congratulations to girls crew who competed with 14 other teams in the Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association Championship Regatta on May 21 at Mashpee Lake on Cape Cod. The first varsity 8+ boat won silver and the third varsity 8+ boat won bronze in their respective grand finals. In addition, the first varsity 4+ and second novice 8+ boats placed fourth and fifth in their finals.
The following students were honored for their outstanding sporting achievements for the spring season by The Boston Globe: Brian Abbott and Gabrielle White were named as Boston Globe/Richard Phelps Scholar-Athlete Nominees; Gordon Hoang was named as a Globe All-Scholastic for Boys Volleyball and was also named Most Valuable Player of the Dual County League (DCL) after leading his team to its first undefeated league record (10-0); Hoang, Philip Chan, Alan Mui and Sean Rabe were named DCL All-Stars for boys volleyball; Elizabeth Balaconis and Laura LeBlanc were named DCL All-Stars for softball; and for boys baseball, the DCL All-Star was Rory Foley. Congratulations to all!

A TEST OF TRIVIA
We knew that the diehard C. Pappas Jameson '37 fans would be coming from all sides after last month's query of "what alumnus and former BLS language teacher of many talents played semi-pro baseball in the Boston Park League, and what was the team on which he played?" It was John Dooley '54 of Virginia who first identified the vastly talented Jameson as well as his former baseball team, the Crosby Club. No doubt Dooley will proudly wear his Latin School T-shirt during the dog days of summer.

For our farewell trivia question for FY06, we turned to another faithful reader, Jim Mahoney '80, to provide what could prove to be one of our most challenging questions to date! Let it be known that Jim - an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and a fabulous brother-in-law - is no slouch in the trivia department, as you will see from his query below.

June's question:
What BLS alumnus was the founding director of one of the institutes that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and is also the eponym for a human disease?

Infectious disease fans seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including your name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail to BLSA.

FOR THOSE THAT MISSED...
If you missed this month's outstanding discussion, "Working for Peace in Boston," you're in luck! Mayor Tom Menino's cable office features a treasure-trove of BLS events, courtesy of Michael Lynch '76, director of the cable office. This latest Speaker Series event featured alumni who are working to stem the tide of youth violence including Raffi Yessayan '86, chief of the Suffolk County D.A.'s Gang Unit, Daniel Linskey '85, newly appointed deputy superintendent and chief of staff in the Office of the Police Commissioner, Peace Boston Founder Cindy Diggs '83, the Rev. William Dickerson '80 of the Greater Love Tabernacle and moderator Stephen Murphy '75 of the Boston City Council. This and other previously filmed events may be found at cityofboston.gov/cable. It's almost as good as being there!

YOUNG ALUMNI REUNIONS
Planning is underway for the 5th, 10th and 15th reunions to be celebrated by the classes of 2001, 1996 and 1991 after the Thanksgiving holiday on November 25. If you'd like to be part of your class committee, e-mail us at alumni@blsa.org.

REUNIONS 2007
While memories of Reunion Weekend 2006 are still fresh, it's time to start working on our next set of celebrations. If your class year ends in 2 or 7 and you'll be commemorating a milestone between 20 and 50 years, save the dates of May 11 and 12, 2007. Class committees are forming now; contact the alumni relations office if you'd like to be part of the effort!

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS
To all of our Alumni serving domestically or abroad in the Armed Forces, please send us your news so we may report it to your classmates and friends! All news may be submitted by clicking here.
Joining the BLSA Board of Trustees for three-year terms are legal eagle John Ganick '57, James G. Connolly '78, vice chairman of corporate banking for Citizens Financial Group, and BLS English teacher and author Rachel Skerritt '95, who will be participating in the Boston Principal Fellowship for the 2006-07 school year. Their terms will begin in September 2006.

Michael H. Mulhern '76 has been named executive director of the MBTA Retirement Fund, the private fund system that manages employee pensions. Mulhern is a former bus driver who rose through the ranks to eventually serve as general manager of MBTA for three years.
