REUNION COUNTDOWN BEGINS
February 1 will mark the final 100 days until Reunion Weekend 2006 officially begins, which begs the question: Have you made your plans yet? Classes ending in 1 and 6 will enjoy festivities at Latin School on Friday, May 12, and throughout the city on Saturday, May 13, culminating in the celebration banquets planned for each class on Saturday evening at the Sheraton Boston. Formal invitations will be sent in early March, but reunion revelers can reserve rooms at the Sheraton now (mention Boston Latin School to receive the special $199 rate). We aren't at liberty to share all the weekend's secrets yet, but those staying through Sunday will have the opportunity to reserve tickets to something that rhymes with "The Dead Lox." Watch your mail for details, or visit www.blsa.org for more information!

JACK O'CALLAHAN '75 TO HEADLINE VARSITY CLUB FUND RAISER
Jack O'Callahan '75, a member of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team, co-captain of BU's 1977-78 national championship team and MVP of the NCAA tournament, will return to Comm. Ave. on the first Beanpot MondayFebruary 6to help raise funds for BLS athletics. CBS4 Reporter Dan Rea '66, a former BLS goalie, will emcee the festivities. This first Varsity Club Breakfast will be held at the Agganis Arena's Burke Club Room, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased by clicking here or by calling (617) 450-0004, ext. 135.

BLSA AT THE BOSTON GLOBE
Join the Greater Boston Chapter and the Boston Business Forum series on Wednesday, February 15, as we head to Morrissey Boulevard to meet a few of the many alumni who help bring The Boston Globe to us each day. Hosted by Globe President Richard Daniels '75 and Marketing Services Vice President Robert Powers '73, alumni panelists will include Spotlight Team editor and three-time Pulitzer-Prize winner Stephen Kurkjian '62. This forum begins at 5:30 p.m. and a traditional Q & A session will be followed by a cocktail reception. Tickets are $20 ($15 for young alumni, classes 1991 to 2005) and are available by clicking here or by calling (617) 450-0004, ext. 135.

DESTINATION: FLORIDA
Snowbirds can expect a Head Master sighting in the coming months as BLSA heads to Palm Beach, Sarasota and Ft. Myers in February and March. If you haven't yet received an invitation, please click the event name for more information: Palm Beach Brunch on February 12, the Sarasota Luncheon Cruise on March 18 or the Red Sox Game and Brunch on March 19.

WARD FELLOWS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS
The John William Ward Fellowship will mark its 20th anniversary on Thursday, June 2, at the Boston Public Library, with a program celebrating public service. Since 1986, the Ward Fellowships have allowed Boston Latin School students to intern for a wide range of public officials each year, including posts with the governor's office, the city council as well as other state and local representatives. For more information about the anniversary celebrations, contact Ernani J. DeAraujo '99.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
Wolfpack swim team captain Kathleen Grueter '08 was featured January 13 on WBZ radio as their "Sports Profile of the Week." Her outstanding motivation all season helped the team finish with a record of 7-8 in the Dual County League.
Through a grant from the Italian government, Boston Latin School hosted a two-day seminar (January 21 and 28) on teaching AP Italian. World Language Department Master Silvana DiCenso Myette was one of the presenters.
Students in Cate Arnold's Connections class participated in a competition this month examining the historical context of the American Renaissance in Boston. Finished projects are on display at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square.

A TEST OF TRIVIA
It was no small feat to win what was certainly one of our longest, and most complicated, trivia questions to date. Still, Fred Rabin '51 more than rose to the challenge of Master Malcolm Flynn's inquiry last month, providing the correct answer of "the dedication of the Public Latin and English High School House on February 22, 1881" to Flynn's query of "What was the date, and what was the occasion?" to an event attended by nearly every dignitary at that time residing within a 40-mile radius of our fair city.

With spring training under way, and many Boston folks flocking south for the winter and for BLSA's annual sojourn to City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers, we pose the following as posed to us by rabid Red Sox fan (and Alumni Relations Director) Lynn Flaherty.

January's question:
What alumnus played for the New York Giants, the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Braves, finishing his career as a scout for the Red Sox from 1949 to 1961?

BLS baseball fans seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail to BLSA.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has appointed BLS parent and alumnus William "Bill" Sinnott '75 as one of two new members to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Board of Trustees. Sinnott, the father of three current BLS students and one graduate, is a former federal prosecutor and colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. He returned from Iraq last year after serving on active duty for eight months.

Steve LaCount '76, the former executive chef at The Country Club in Brookline, recently had his new restaurant, Chiara Bistro in Westwood, featured in the "Dining Out" section of The Boston Globe.

Hank Hryniewicz '79 was named executive sports editor at the Boston Herald in July. He has worked at the "feisty tabloid" for 17 years and resides in Brookline with his wife, May, and their four children: Emma (a senior at Fontbonne Academy in Milton), Ian (a freshman at Brookline High School), Adam (a fifth grader at Pierce School in Brookline) and Abby (a second grader, also at Pierce School).

Cindy Diggs '83, founder of the hip-hop advocacy group Us Making Moves Forever, designed the new "Start Peace" T-shirts unveiled this month in Boston as a response to rising violence in the city. The shirts were created to replace the controversial "Stop Snitchin" shirts that had been sold locally. Proceeds from the sale of the shirts benefit the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute's Survivors of Homicide Fund. Click here to read the full story.

In late December, Amherst pharmacist Denis Cunniffe '94 was featured in The Boston Globe in a story on the "increasingly active role" pharmacists play "in the management of a patient's illness." The story also talked about collaborative drug therapy management legislation, which would allow pharmacists in the state of Massachusetts to "participate in the initiating, monitoring, modifying and discontinuing of a patient's drug therapy."

Earlier this month, Patrick Byrne '99 was sworn in as a Boston Police officer after serving for nearly a year in Iraq for the U.S. Navy. Byrne, a South Boston native, was close to graduation from the police academy last February when he was called to active duty.
