BLSA HEADS TO FLORIDA
Alumni will gather in southwest Florida the weekend of March 18 & 19, for a series of Latin School events. Sarasota area alumni can visit with the Head Master aboard the Marina Jack II, setting sail for a luncheon cruise on Saturday, March 18 at 11:30 a.m. A little further south, we’ll enjoy our traditional BLSA Day at the Ballpark as the Red Sox take on the Baltimore Orioles at City of Palms Park on Sunday, starting at 2:05 p.m. A pregame breakfast buffet is available at the Ramada Riverfront (just 1.5 miles from the ballpark), from 10 a.m. until noon.

NEVER TOO YOUNG TO NETWORK
The Young Alumni Council and Holland & Knight will host a Young Alumni Networking Night on Thursday, April 6. Alumni panelists will share their career stories and offer tips for job seekers. Nicole DeBenedictis ’97, Mary O’Neill ’96 and Connie Tom ’91 chair the host committee. A complete listing of industries and featured speakers will be posted shortly.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'
The Golden State is home to more than 729 Latin School alumni and BLSA hopes to see many of them when we travel west March 30-April 2. California alumni near San Francisco (Chapter Dinner—Thursday, March 30, Scala’s Bistro), San Diego (Luncheon and Panel Discussion—Saturday, April 1, The Prado) and Los Angeles (Annual Meeting & Luncheon—Sunday, April 2, Riviera Country Club) should click the city names above for more information about events in their area.

FORE CHARITY
John Fitzgerald ’91, Ailbe Glynn ’91, Raffi Yessayan ’86 and Brian Waters ’86 will host the 6th Annual An Tain Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, June 26, at Putterham and Newton Commonwealth Golf Clubs. Their efforts have aided a number of charities, including the John Yessayan Scholarship Fund, administered by BLSA. This year’s charity is the Sean Waters Memorial Fund. For more information about their efforts, please email John Fitzgerald.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL
Congratulations to the seventh- and eighth-grade Mathcounts Team for placing fifth out of 31 schools at the Chapter Competition on Saturday, February 4. The team now qualifies for the State Competition at Wentworth on Saturday, March 4.
BLS students and staff collected a record 1,614 pounds of canned food in the fall food drive. The bounty was donated to The Friends of the Shattuck Shelter.

A TEST OF TRIVIA
Last months query brought out the best in all our sports fans. But it was Joseph F. Flynn '69 who replied first with the correct answer: Fred Maguire '18 who played for New York Giants, Chicago Cubs and Boston Braves and later was a scout for the Boston Red Sox.

Perhaps little known but certainly not trivial, this months tidbit comes from Assistant Head Master Malcolm Flynn.

February's question:
Some of this 19th century artist's marble works are displayed in the Boston Athenaeum, Brooklyn Museum, Memorial Hall at Harvard and the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Students of classical art seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including the artists and your name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail to BLSA.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS
Krystal Brooks '99 returned in December from a year long deployment to Afghanistan with Operation Enduring Freedom. She sends her thanks to classmates for cards and emails, “they helped to bring up my spirits quite a bit.”

Founder of Dunk the Vote and longtime community activist Ron Bell ‘81 was awarded the Boston Celtics “Heroes Among Us” award in January. He will also receive the first "Rosa’s Sparks" award from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law at February event commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Bell has been a voting rights advocate and community organizer for over 20 years. In 1992, he founded Dunk the Vote, an organization dedicated to increasing civic participation and promoting social change.

Music by Rich Newman '69 and his Amherst-based band Tagyerit is featured on a video game released this month. Hip-hop artist Talib Kweli raps over samples of TagYerit's song "Subway Surfing" which was inspired by songwriter Newman's daily ride to BLS on the T for six years.

Rosemary Macedo '82 was interviewed for the Fund Q&A column of a recent edition of Businessweek. You can read the full column, A Behavioral Approach to Funds: Rosemary Macedo of Bailard International Equity Fund studies investor reactions to stay on top of the game, by clicki ng here.

On Thursday, February 23, Children’s Hospital presented its 2005 David S. Weiner Award to hospital chaplain Sister Carlotta Gilarde, CSJ. Established in 1997 to acknowledge former Children’s president and CEO David S. Weiner '59 and his 30 years of service to Children's, the award recognizes outstanding individuals who demonstrate commitment, leadership and potential for success in helping improve the health of children. Weiner is now president and CEO of BLSA. Proving that Latin School connections are everywhere, Sister Carlotta is the sibling and aunt of numerous Latin School alumni!
As we continue to learn of alumni serving the United States overseas, it seems appropriate to create a regular forum to recognize their courage and commitment. If you know of an alumna/alumnus serving in the military, please drop a note to blsa@blsa.org so we can include them in future issues.
