SEASONS GREETINGS
The Boston Latin School Association wishes all of its alumni a joyous holiday season and a happy and healthy new year! Fiat omnibus pax!

BACK TO THE BOYS OF SUMMER
Snow's on the ground in Boston, so there's no better time to start planning trips to the sunshine state of Florida! To date, 100 tickets have been reserved for the Red Sox spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles at City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers. Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 and Association President David Weiner '59 will host a pre-game brunch at the Ramada Riverfront. Tickets — for the game and the brunch — will go on sale on January 23 and may be ordered online and by telephone. If you do not normally receive mailings about Florida events please be certain to send your information to the alumni office before year end to be notified of the final details. Here's to the sun and the Sox!

BEST OF OFF BROADWAY
Thanks to producer Mark Cuddy '72, Latin School alumni have the inside track on seeing one of the hottest shows of the season, his latest work "Five Course Love" at the Minetta Lane Theatre in New York City. The normally $65 tickets are available to BLSers for $55, with $15 of each sale benefiting BLSA. The musical comedy, which has received rave reviews from The New York Times and the Associated Press, tells a tale of "Five dates. Five restaurants. Endless sidesplitting laughs." To partake in the special ticket offer — which is good until December 31 — call (212) 420-8000 or (212) 307-4100 and mention "code BLSA." For more information on the show itself, click here to visit their website.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL

Seniors Helen Wu and Caroline O'Loughlin were both named Boston Globe All Scholastics for their outstanding performances in track this year.

Lee J. Dunn Jr. '61 was responsible for arranging the visit of a special December guest to Alma Mater; that of HM Consul-General John Rankin of the British Embassy in Boston. Rankin spoke to a senior economics class and answered questions posed about the European Union (EU) before touring the facility with Dunn and Assistant Head Master Ruthann Russell. "I've heard about this place," said Rankin, who was most impressed by the auditorium, as well as the historic American names captured on the frieze.
Boston Latin's A.P. Economics students have won their third consecutive title! On December 15, the Economics Team competed at MIT in the Junior Achievement Titans of Business Competition, and swept the event, taking First, Second, Third and Fourth Place! Congratulations to team captains Peter Peng, Matt Luongo, Matt Su and Azra Borogovac.

A TEST OF TRIVIA
Hats off to Joseph Hooban '62, who met Malcolm Flynn's November challenge by rightly naming alumnus Francis James Child as the "19th century man of letters who compiled a work in eight volumes that is still the standard reference for scholars in his field," the field being, of course, English and Scottish ballads, as if we all didn't know.

With an awaiting bowl of sticky toffee holiday pudding calling our name, we will not delay with releasing the last trivia question of 2005, though don't expect any gifts or gilt for a gimel from Mr. Flynn, who has fired off perhaps his craftiest question to date. A glass or two of eggnog could prove helpful in unlocking the key to this puzzler.

December's question:
"Seated on the platform were the Committee on High Schools and invited guests, consisting of His Excellency John D. Long, Governor of Massachusetts; His Honor Frederick O. Prince, Mayor of Boston; Hon. Robert C. Winthrop; Rev. Ralph Waldo Emerson; Hon. Marshall P. Wilder; Prof. William B. Rogers, President of the Institute of Technology; Rev. Samuel K. Lothrop, D.D.; Rev. Phillips Brooks, D.D.; Rev. J. M. Manning, D.D.; Rev. George E. Ellis, D.D.; Rev. A. A. Miner, D.D.; Rev. Robert C. Waterston, D.D., President of the English High School Association; Hon. F. W. Lincoln, Hon. Jonathan A. Lane, Henry P. Kidder, Esq., Thomas Gaffield, Esq., Col. Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Hon. Henry K. Oliver, Rev. George A. Thayer; Prof. Edwin P. Seaver, Superintendent of Schools; Charles K. Dillaway, Esq., President of the Latin School Association; Ex-Gov. William Gaston; George A. Clough, Esq., City Architect; The head masters of the Latin and English High Schools; members of the School Committee, city government and others."

What was the date, and what was the occasion?

True trivia mavens seeking a free T-shirt in the new year should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail to BLSA.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS

The Rev. Bernard McLaughlin '51, pastor of St. Gerard Majella Church in Canton, was appointed as the Massachusetts State Senate's official chaplain in October by Senate President Robert Travaglini. The man known to many as "Father Mac" is the first to occupy the position since 1979.

George P. Field '67, partner in charge of the Boston office of Verrill Dana, LLP, has been named co-chair for the Boston Bar Association's Public Service Committee. Field has served on the BBA's pro bono task force, nominating committee, and as chair of the solo and small firm section. Since 1998, he has been co-chair of the BBA's summer jobs program. He is also a charter fellow of the Boston Bar Foundation.

Earlier this month, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston School Committee appointed a 12-member search committee to identify and recommend candidates to replace outgoing BPS Superintendent Thomas W. Payzant. Two BLS alumni, Boston Teachers Union President and BLS parent Richard Stutman '68 and BLS Bulletin Editor Mary Tamer '85, a current BPS parent volunteer and board member of the League of Women Voters of Boston, will be part of this important process. Attorney Peter A. Senopoulos '75, deputy general counsel for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Fire Services, was recently awarded the prestigious Eugene H. Rooney Award issued by Governor Mitt Romney. The Rooney award, created by the Massachusetts Legislature, is granted to a state employee in recognition of excellence, outstanding performance and creativity in the field of human resource development and training.
Paul English '82 has been the subject of much media coverage of late, including recent articles in People magazine and The Boston Globe, about his cheat sheet on how to reach a human on a computerized phone system. Click here to visit his site for tips. English is also the cofounder of Kayak.com, a travel search engine.

The Rev. Paul O'Brien '82 of St. Patrick Parish in Lawrence is continuing his efforts to raise money for the Cor Unum (Latin for "One Heart") Meal Center through the organization he co-founded with TV personality Conan O'Brien and Pittsburgh Pirates first basemen Sean Casey, called Labels Are For Jars. To date, the organization has raised more than $500,000 — through donations and the sale of T-shirts available online and at Newbury Comics — for a meal center to be built in Lawrence, one of the poorest cities in the United States. Click here for more information.

John A. Nucci '70 has been named vice-president for government & community affairs at Suffolk University. Nucci has served for the last 21 years in elected public office in Boston, most recently as the elected clerk-magistrate of the Superior Criminal Court for Suffolk County.
