A TRUE CELEBRATION OF LOYALTY
Nearly 200 leadership donors and current volunteers joined together for a September 20 event at Alma Mater that paid tribute to the philanthropy, service and commitment of her graduates. Charles I. Clough Jr. '60, was added to the school's Founder's Gallery, which recognizes those individuals who have donated $1 million or greater to BLS. In addition, four school spaces were dedicated in honor of Ruth and Eliot L. Bernstein '30; Thomas F. and Teresa T. Cashman P'78,'83,'85 (given by Thomas R. Cashman '78); Abraham Slifka (given in memory by his son, Richard B. Slifka '57); and Eliot I. Snider '37. In addition, two proud Latin School boys were presented with volunteerism awards for their tireless work on behalf of BLSA; Larry DiCara '67 received the Dr. Joseph F. Desmond '44 Volunteer of the Year Award, and Bill Koplovsky '54 was awarded the Lee J. Dunn '24 Award. Congratulations to all of our honorees!

WOLFPACK "UNDER THE LIGHTS"
Just a reminder that all are welcome to cheer on the Wolfpack as they take on Wayland at White Stadium on Friday, September 30 beginning at 7 p.m. This will be the football team's only home game "under the lights." For a look at all of the fall sports schedules, please click here.

HELP WANTED
Latin's Saturday Success School is currently seeking tutors! Saturday Success School takes place at BLS on Saturday mornings from 8:45 a.m. to noon from October to May, excluding long weekends and school vacation weeks. Tutors are now needed in English, reading, math (Algebra 1 and 2), Spanish, French, Italian, biology, German, earth science, physics, chemistry and last but not least, Latin! A tutor orientation will take place at the school on October 1, and any and all interested alumni are encouraged to contact Michael Giordano '84, director of the McCarthy Institute for Transition and Support, at (617) 635-8895, ext. 213.

CHAMPAGNE, JAZZ & ART
Philadelphia-area alumni are invited to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Sunday, October 2 at 10:30 a.m. for a buffet brunch featuring champagne and live jazz. Following the brunch, guests may "pay what they wish" for admission to the collections and are encouraged to explore this world-renowned museum at their leisure. For more information, contact Kate DeForest or simply register online by clicking here. The cost is $38 per person, or $35 per person for graduates of the last 15 years.

DINNER DOWN SOUTH
Biotech industry executive Elizabeth Chen '81 will be the featured speaker when the South Shore Chapter gathers for its annual dinner on Tuesday, October 25, at Siros Marina Bay in Quincy. Her remarks, "The Times…They are a'changing…" will focus on women, men, family and careers, but specifically about how we need to re-cast what and how we think about careers and how we each need to do our job to make it happen. Head Master Cornelia A. Kelley H'44 will also provide an update on BLS today. Tickets are $40 per person, $36 for young alumni and are available by clicking here or by calling (617) 450-0004, ext. 135.

ALUMNAE CALLING NIGHT
Sponsored by BLSA's new Alumnae Initiative, the next Alumnae Discussion Group will take place on Tuesday, November 1, beginning at 6 p.m. at the BLSA offices. The focus will be upcoming events and promoting attendance at the Alumni Dinner. Come prepared to make phone calls! Due to building security, pre-registration is required. Click here to register, or contact Nicole Devlin '01 by calling (617) 450-0004, ext. 135 for more information.

A TEST OF TRIVIA
Some would wager, including this very scribe, that last month's trivia question was hardly an easy one, yet somehow a youngster among us was able to solve it in record time, much to the dismay of trivia kingpin (and Assistant Head Master) Malcolm Flynn. The answer to August's question — as head of a commission appointed to evaluate a medical theory that challenged conventional wisdom, seeking a result that would be objectively demonstrable rather than subjectively debatable, this Latin School lad went on to devise the first blind test of a medical treatment — was delivered in mere minutes by Kaitlyn Leahy '96, with her keyboard no doubt smoking by the speed of her response. Leahy knew that it was none other than Benjamin Franklin who was asked, in 1784, to head the French commission, which included Lavoisier and Guillotin. The Franklin Commission exposed Anton Mesmer and his followers as charlatans, a fact noted by a handful of our informed respondents.

Now, seizing the challenge before him, Mr. Flynn has once again upped the ante to all Latin School scholars out there, and presents this month's trivia question, citing, "I don't think they can Google this one!"

September's question:
In 1935 Henry Munroe Rogers said of this renowned Boston Latin School alumnus and former usher: "He could reform the rest of the world, but he could not reform this class [1858]."

Reformers and the unreformed seeking a free T-shirt should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail to blsa@blsa.org.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS

Sid Topol ’41 of The Topol Group and Ron Bell ’81 of the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities have joined forces for “Retracing the Struggle: The Legacy of the Voting Rights Act of 1965,” a commemorative march led by Congressman John Lewis of Georgia scheduled for October 30. The march will follow a route similar to that taken by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965 to protest the segregation of Boston’s public schools. For more information or to participate, click here or call Bell at (617) 445-3700.

In the September 12 issue of TIME magazine, Princeton economist (and Latin School graduate) Burton Malkiel '49 was mentioned in an interview with John Bogle, 76, the well-known founder of the Vanguard Group and the inventor of the index fund. When TIME posed the following question to Bogle, "If you could give all the nation's investors one book to read, what would it be?" he responded: "I did my best to provide that book in 'Bogle on Mutual Funds.' I'd say, if you're really a basic investor, Bill Schultheis's 'The Coffeehouse Investor.' And if you're more sophisticated, I'd certainly do Burton Malkiel's 'A Random Walk Down Wall Street.' "
Marine and attorney Joseph Callahan ’77 of Roslindale is on his way back from Iraq where he worked with a team assisting the Iraqi Special Tribunal with investigating and prosecuting war crimes. Callahan, who served a one-year tour of duty, is a current BLS parent and works in the legal department at Boston’s City Hall.
On September 25, Christopher Perruzzi '80 and his family participated in their fifth consecutive Boston Arthritis Walk under their team name, "Isabella's Inspiration" in honor of Perruzzi's 7-year-old daughter,
who suffers from arthritis. “This summer, at the 2005 American
Juvenile Arthritis Organization Conference, Isabella wrote and sent letters to senators and congressmen asking them to co-sponsor the Arthritis Prevention Control and Cure Act,” said Perruzzi. “Isabella now wears orthotics because of residual affects of arthritis related foot and ankle issues — but she hasn't complained too much because she got all new shoes to wear." For more information, click here to visit the Boston Arthritis Walk website and then click ISABELLA P.
The great works of Rev. Paul O'Brien '82 of St. Patrick Church in Lawrence was the subject of a September 22 Boston Globe article, as his efforts have raised $900,000 for the establishment of a center to feed Lawrence's hungry 365 days a year. "We've got a galaxy of social ills in Lawrence, and in that galaxy, at the heart of a lot of issues, is the reality of hunger," O'Brien said. "If you take the economic poverty people experience and add in an extraordinarily expensive housing market, it leaves many folks with harrowing choices." To read the article in its entirety, please click here.
New York City schoolteacher Jeremy Duhme '89 took two years off from his day job to work as associate producer for a documentary "about four funny and sweet kids from the Baltimore ghetto who are constantly suspended from the Baltimore Public Schools, and who go to school in Africa for a year to try to turn their lives around." The film, "The Boys of Baraka," has already received coverage in the New York Times and was winner of the special jury prize at The South by Southwest Film Festival; the grand jury prize at The Newport International Film Festival; best documentary feature at The Atlanta Film Festival; and the audience award at the AFI/Silverdocs Film Festival. It opens at the New York City Film Festival on November 30 for a two week run. Click here for more information.
Rashaun Martin '97 has been elected by his fellow alumni to serve on the Board of Governors of the Catholic University of America Alumni
Association.
