WE'RE
BACK!
It's been a hot one, but with the summer days rapidly dwindling,
it is time for us to return along with the promise of a more temperate
fall. With school set to resume on September 8, we bring you the
latest news and the ever-popular trivia question
from
your monthly source for all things Latin, @blsa.
DRUM ROLL, PLEASE
The Graduate Awards Committee is pleased to announce
the 2005 Graduate of the Year and Outstanding Recent Graduate
of the Year. Professor Stephen Greyser '52 of the Harvard
Business School and John Hanlon '92 of Project D.E.E.P.
(Dorchester Educational Enrichment Program) will be honored at
the annual Alumni Dinner on Tuesday, November 22, at the Park
Plaza Hotel. Please join all of us in congratulating two outstanding
examples of Latin School's proud tradition of excellence! Tickets
for the dinner go on sale October 1.
FALL REUNIONS
Reunion celebrations for 1990, 1995 and 2000 will
take place on Saturday, November 26 at various downtown Boston
locations. For full information on sites, times and ticket prices,
please
THE CLASSIC CONTINUES
A good time was indeed had by all at the First
Wolfpack Classic Golf Tournament on July 7, with more than $20,000
raised to benefit BLS Athletics. Golfers from classes of 1948
to 2004 took to the course at the Ferncroft Country Club in Danvers,
playing 18 holes before partaking in dinner, a live auction and
an awards ceremony, organized by Bruce McKinnon '74, Pat
Daly '74 and Dan McCarthy '74. Golfers who missed this
year's tourney should not despair, as it is slated to return on
June 8, 2006, to Ferncroft. Anyone interested in serving on the
Wolfpack Classic Committee or who would like to be added to its
mailing list should contact BLSA's Rich
Napolitano at (617) 450-0004, ext. 131.
ROWING FOR DOLLARS
Last spring, Boston Latin's Girls' Crew Team won
the Massachusetts Public Rowing Association Championship, going
in as underdogs and upsetting Brookline's champion team by half
a second in the final heat! In hopes of continued support for
this outstanding group of girls, its parent group is hosting a
fund raiser on Thursday, September 29, at the Cambridge Boathouse.
Tickets are $30 per person. For more information, please contact
Larry Costello '75
father of rower Lauren
Costello '06.
GOING, GOING, GONE
Each year, the BLS Home & School Association
hosts its annual auction, with all proceeds going toward college
scholarships for the graduating senior class. Last year's event
- which raised $40,000 - included more than 300 silent auction
items, and 15 live auction items, including sports tickets, vacation
homes and the priceless "Head Master for a Day" prize.
This year's auction is slated for Saturday, November 19, and includes
dinner in the BLS Dining Hall for $20 per person. For more information,
or to donate an item for the auction, contact co-chairs David
and Carol O'Donnell P'02,'06 at (617) 327-2713.
REUNIONS 2006
Reunion year is underway for classes that end in
"1" or "6." While 1946 will celebrate its
60th Reunion in April, festivities for the 20th through 55th reunions
are set for May 12 and 13, 2006. Class committees are forming
now; please contact Lynn Flaherty
if you would like to take part in your class effort. Please
note that young alumni reunions
for 1991, 1996 and 2001
will take place in November
2006.
CLASS ACTS
So it's not your reunion year, but you still want
to get together with the gang from Homeroom 201? Join your class
committee and help keep your class active in between reunions!
Many classes are still in need of class agents to staff their
committees, and duties include both friend- and fund-raising activities.
For more information, contact Lynn
Flaherty.
A TEST OF TRIVIA
June's trivia question put our summering scholars
to the test once again, though an impressive number of correct
responses were received, including the winning response all the
way from Rio de Janeiro (BLSers are indeed everywhere). The nimble
fingered Jordan Rabinovitz '58 secured his photo-finish
win with his answer of "Edward Everett" to the query
of who was the BLS graduate that "Emerson considered to be
the greatest teacher and orator of his age
." Congratulations
to Jordan. Your T-shirt will be delivered by hand shortly, since
we have never been to Rio.
For our first trivia question for the 2005-06 school year, we
are pleased to mark the return of Assistant Head Master Malcolm
Flynn:
August's question:
As head of a commission appointed to
evaluate a medical theory that challenged conventional wisdom,
seeking a result that would be objectively demonstrable rather
than subjectively debatable, this Latin School lad went on to
devise the first blind test of a medical treatment.
Suitable scholars seeking a free T-shirt should
send responses
including name and class year
magna cum celeritate
via e-mail to BLSA.
BIKING FOR BOSTON'S SCHOOLS

will kick off from Franklin Park on the morning of Sunday, September
25, with proceeds from the event used to enhance the technology
programs within the Boston Public Schools and neighborhoods. Riders
will join together for a leisurely ride, choosing either a 15-,
25- or 40-mile loop through the city's most scenic parks and neighborhoods.

inspiring age of 93, James Guilford '28 is among
Latin School's more senior alumni, and also among her proudest.

The
weekly Boston Business Journal kept Latin School alumni
in the news this summer, featuring two of Alma Mater's finest
on its front page in less than a month. In the July 15-21
edition, Rebecca Galeota '92, an associate director
at Cushman & Wakefield, was featured for the remarkable
way in which she and her colleagues managed her battle with
Hodgkin's lymphoma, which is now in remission after treatment.
In the August 5-11 issue, BLSA Board Chair Mark Michalowski
'77 talked about the recent trend among law firms to pursue
partners from competing firms to grow their own strategic
practice areas. Michalowski is the executive partner at Holland
& Knight LLP. |
